Marseille City Tour: September 20-29, 2024

Marseille bustling, vibrant & delicious

I can’t wait to guide you through this glorious city. I’ve explored city paths and hikes for you, found amarvelous evening boat excursion, discovered delicious restaurants, colorful neighborhoods, spectacular spots for evening picnics and drinks, walks — up stairs and down, museums and more. The 10 day tour includes:

- a morning walk up to the city’s mother, Notre Dame de la Garde, and there to view the numerous ex voto paintings, and take in the glorious views in all directions.
- a visit to one of the most eclectic and glorious cookware stores I've ever been to.

-a water taxi ride to a fishing village for a classic Bouillabaisse fish feast.
- roaming the vibrant, multi-cultural city markets and squares
- learning the multi-millennial history of the Vieux Port, view the reconstruction of recently discovered underwater cave paintings.
- dinners with a guest chef.

-a morning visit to the famous Château d’If, home of the prison where the Count of Monte Cristo was interred (until his escape!).
- a hike along the limestone cliffs of the Callanques with an optional swim in the turqoise waters.

- an evening dinner schooner excursion with an optional swim to a the cove of a nearby island.
- a winery visit by the tiny sea-side village of Cassis, land of the Marsanne grape - bright and tart to accompany fish on a summer’s day.
- a day in Aix en Provence to stroll by the fountains, get in a bit of shopping, and view Cézanne's studio and the Henri Bonnard exhibition.

I've found a great town house for our base. It has three bedrooms and two shared baths/wcs, as well as spacious outdoor patio and living spaces.

The tour will involve a good bit of walking about the city - up stairs and down. Most days we’ll be taking public transportation (2 busses drop us off directly below the house, connecting us to the Vieux Port). Our day in Cassis we’ll head out in our rental van. In some cases there are optional bus routes in place of the walk (such as up to Notre Dame de la Garde), though not all. Swimming and hikes are optional.
